The Tourguide Tourguides deliver their patter as though the speech had been prepared from them fifteen years earlier. This is because their speech has been prepared for them fifteen years earlier. Their monotone and disinterested delivery ensures that when they relate a humorous event in the history of whatever, the punch line is indistinguishable from the rest, and so you just have to laugh after what seems an appropriate length of time and hope. Many Tourguides have to wear silly period costumes or other strange garments, and are quite clearly rather embarrassed by this. The Tourguides words are "Hello, I'm your representative from the seventeenth century." but every other mode of expression (face, body, voice tone etc) is saying "Look I know this is ridiculous, and you probably think it's funny, but can we just pretend that I look normal please?". |
